Mmm hockey. Must sate hockey fetish...
  • Back in 2005, some crazy reporter from The Oregonian decided he wanted to talk to me =P
From October til June, all things stop for HOCKEY! I grew up watching the Washington Capitals on TV, but my family was not at all interested in sports so I never got any closer to seeing a game than sneaking into my grandparents' bedroom to watch the home broadcasts. I spent two years at Clarkson University and worked as a speech and writing tutor which meant, among other things, that I was often "helping" write papers for a variety of Montreal Canadiens prospects as well as attending as many Clarkson home games as I could get in. Two years in Buffalo planted me squarely into the hometown of an NHL team for the first time and I couldn't have been happier. While I did live a short while in NYC, I could not bring myself to cheer for one of the three NYC teams. I do have SOME standards. Most of the nine years I lived in Portland were also spent as a Portland Winter Hawks season ticket holder and team booster. Trying to get to a Canucks game would have been seven hours driving assuming the ferry was running, or nine plus hours to get to one of the California teams. Sure I love hockey, but I don't love the oil cartel THAT much. Supporting the local WHL major juniors was good enough for me and, honestly, a lot of fun. I've up and moved yet again and I've landed smack dab in the middle of another hockey hometown. This time, however, I'm in the realm of the Hershey Bears of the AHL who happen to be the affiliate of, you guessed it, the Washington Capitals. Yes I know I'm in Pennsylvania and we have the Philadelphia Flyers two hours to my east and the Pittsburg Penguins three hours to my west, but karma would dictate that I really just need to be a Caps fan
